Sun-Symantec Resource Center

Sun and Symantec are part of a strategic relationship formed to help the two global leaders sell complimentary products from each other’s portfolios.

One of the challenges of this type of relationship is the flow of information between sales teams in two different companies spread across multiple countries.

The Sun-Symantec Resource Center was launched to facilitate the timely and efficient flow of information between these two organizations. Here are a few of the innovative things they're doing to put their portal to work for them:

Dynamic Content Organization -- Content that's added to the site is tagged by type, product, and category. Using these tags, the system automatically and dynamically organizes and displays the various pieces. If a content piece is tagged as a presentation, that includes messaging, and is about the PureDisk product line, it shows up under each of those tabs -- making it easy for users to browse for content that matches their needs precisely. On obvious example of this technology at work is the site's main navigation. When a user clicks on any of the tabs across the top of the home page, the database returns the appropriate list of assets -- all without writing a single line of HTML.

Front Page "River of News" -- Whenever a new marketing brochure, presentation, or sales video is added to the site, it shows up on the front page river of news (and in the site's RSS feed). Sales and Marketing pros are always just a click away from the site's newest additions.

Automatic Role Assignment -- When a new user with either a sun.com or symantec.com email address signs up at the site, they are automatically assigned the "Employee" role. The plan is to use this role to differentiate employees from partners in the future and allow employees and partners access to different parts of the site.

Automatic Newsletter Subscription -- When a new user signs up at the site, they are automatically subscribed to the site's newsletter. They, of course, are free to opt-out of newsletter mailings at any time but managing the subscription list in coordination with the site's user list makes it an automated (and manageable) task.
