Are there any tricks to getting a lot of people to link to your site? I've heard that Google doesn't really count link-exchange type links. Is that true? If so, what are some other ways to do it so it works better?

A. Yes..er..No...well....Yes
With the amount of websites out there that relate to the material that you have on your site, You could easily get caught up in linking to as many possible sites that you can. Although this may work temporarily, for a long term approach I would recommend being a little more picky from whom you request links. "Organically" grown websites tend to have a lot more success in the linking popularity arena. Remember that the Search Engines base the popularity on QUALITY as well as quantity. Your patience is your biggest tool for this one. Picking 1 or 2 websites a day to request links from is a great start! If you dont ask, no one will link to you.

A. Google hates it when you use a SPAM type linking campaign. This means that when you use real estate link exchange sites, you are shooting yourself in the foot. The worst thing to do is get 400 million sites that have nothing to do with your product to link to you. However, the best thing that you can do is get quality sites that have a good Alexa or Google ranking to link to your site. Remeber, 1-2 a day is a great place to start. Eventually you will not need to ask, as you get great content and a higher link popularity, they will be linking to you automatically.

A. Patience. That is the number one thing that works better. Be patient and decide that it will take at least a few months to notice the effect of asking for links. You want to hand pick the sites that are linking to you. Dont use the Real estate link exchanges, it will not help.
A few things to remember.
1) Quality over Quantity
2) Patience
3) Ask that your URL or keywords be put in the link.
